How many drops of essential oil should I put in a diffuser?

An essential oil diffuser is ideal for purifying the air in a room, adding a pleasant scent or relaxing. Do you have one, or would you like to buy one, and are wondering how to use it?

Find out how many drops of essential oil to put in a diffuser with this guide from Landema!

What are the different types of essential oil diffusers?

There are several types of essential oil diffuser: ultrasonic, nebulizer and gentle heat. Each model requires specific dosages to obtain the best results with essential oils. Landema provides information on the number of drops of essential oil required for each type of diffuser.

Ultrasonic diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusers are the most commonly used. They are also known as mist diffusers. This type of device uses cold water combined with ultrasonic vibrations to disperse essential oils into the air.

Ultrasonic diffusers are very easy to use, and are suitable for the vast majority of essential oils available on the market.

Simply add 3 to 5 drops of one or more essential oils per 100 ml of water, such as Pinus pinaster orCitrus bergamia essential oil, and diffuse for 10 to 20 minutes. If your ultrasonic diffuser is placed in a large room, we recommend adding a few extra drops for a more sustained aroma and benefits.

Nebulizing diffusers

Nebulizing diffusers are highly effective at dispersing essential oils into the air. Essential oils are dispersed by a particle dispersion phenomenon, without the use of water. They are therefore inhaled pure and absorbed directly by the body.
Nebulizing diffusers are particularly well-suited to the use of essential oils for their effect on the nervous system, such as True Lavender(Lavandula angustifolia) or Petit Grain Bigarade (Citrus aurantium var. amara).

For best results, add 10 to 15 drops of essential oils to the device. The unit generally operates in 15-minute diffusion cycles, with 15-minute breaks in between.

Please note that a nebulizer may be slightly noisier than other types of diffuser, without affecting the quality of use. It may also be a little more difficult to clean.

Soft-heat diffusers

Heat diffusers, also known as candle diffusers, use a candle or heat source to heat the essential oil and diffuse it into the room. Their use is particularly recommended with strong-smelling essential oils such as Ylang-Ylang(Cananga odorata) essential oil, which Landema offers in 3 references: Organic and FFL complete Ylang-Ylang essential oil, complete Ylang-Ylang essential oil and Ylang-Ylang extra essential oil.

Add 5 drops of essential oils to the diffuser for optimal use. Be careful not to leave the diffuser unattended, to avoid any risk of mishap.

As essential oils are heated when using this type of diffuser, they may lose some of their therapeutic properties. If you want to enjoy the benefits of essential oils beyond their fragrance, we recommend you use another type of device.

What parameters need to be taken into account when deciding how many drops of essential oil to put in a diffuser?

Two parameters need to be taken into account when deciding how many drops of essential oil to put in a diffuser. Find out which ones to take into account to get the most out of your device!

Room surface area

The surface area of the room in which your diffuser is placed is the most important parameter to take into consideration in order to correctly measure the number of drops of essential oils to put in it.
A small surface does not require the same number of drops as a large one.

Diffusion duration

The duration of the diffusion also determines the dosage of drops to be placed in the diffuser. If you wish to use the diffuser for an extended period, the quantity of essential oils required will be less than for a shorter period.

However, it is recommended not to prolong diffusion beyond 30 minutes in the same room.

You now have all the essential recommendations you need to know how many drops of essential oil to put in a diffuser. Adapt your dosage according to the type of appliance you have, and the size of the room in which you plan to place the diffuser.
