Ylang-Ylang plant: what is it?
Ylang-Ylang is an aromatic tree with majestic foliage, part of the Annonaceae family, found in Southeast Asia. Its yellow flowers are used to extract an essential oil by distillation. The oil is widely used for its floral fragrance. Ylang Ylang blooms at its peak in October-November.
Its relaxing and soothing properties make it a first-choice essential oil for relieving stress and anxiety. It also has properties that act on muscular aches and pains, skin problems and thinning hair.
Note that the Ylang-Ylang plant has a very high tolerance threshold. Always dilute before use.

Nervous disorders
Ylang-Ylang can help relieve stress and anxiety in a number of ways:
- phases of night-time awakening accompanied by anxiety can occur at any time of life; to remedy this, you can apply Ylang-Ylang essential oil diluted 5-10% in a vegetable oil to your wrists;
- if you feel overworked or irritable, you can massage yourself with Ylang-Ylang oil diluted 10% in a vegetable oil of your choice (note that you can also opt for olfactory administration);
- for anxiety at work, apply a few drops on a cloth or in an olfactory stick.
Skin and hair problems
Skin and hair problems are common. Ylang-Ylan, the yellow flower, can help you take care of them:
- for diffuse acne on oily or combination skin, mix 6 drops of Ylang-Ylang with 4 drops of Manuka in your jar of day cream and apply locally;
- to restore vitality to dry, damaged hair, apply a treatment based on coconut oil with 2 to 3 drops of Ylang-Ylang essential oil, leave on for ten minutes, shampoo as usual, then rinse.
Cardiovascular disorders
Ylang-Ylang essential oil can relieve certain cardiovascular disorders, including :
- sensations of palpitations and arrhythmia, by diluting 10% of Ylang-Ylang essential oil in a vegetable oil of your choice, massaging into the solar plexus area or by olfaction;
- for mild hypertension, take a drop of Ylang-Ylang on a sugar cube, a teaspoon of honey or vegetable oil over a short period to reduce symptoms.
What precautions should I take when using Ylang-Ylang (Cananga Odorata) essential oil?
Although Ylang-Ylang essential oil has no toxic effects, certain precautions must be taken to use it optimally:
- Ylang-Ylang (Cananga Odorata)essential oil must be diluted (20% maximum);
- in anticipation of generalized use, perform a test in the hollow of the elbow 24 hours in advance to ensure there is no allergic reaction;
- if you suffer from dermatitis, use of this essential oil is not recommended, and the concentration should not exceed 1%.
